During the witch trials, there were many reasons why someone might have been accused of witchcraft. Apart from women being the majority of the accused, there were also those who didn’t attend church, or attended the wrong church, It could depend on economic status or the influence on society the person had, it could be because of age, mostly teenage girls where targeted and you could also be accused if you were know to talk to yourself. Above all, people were accused if they supported another accused witch or if they accused the accusers of lying. However, not all of the people accused of witchcraft were accused because of these reasons, for example:
Dorothy Good: The daughter of, also accused, Sarah Good, was only 4 years old when she was accused and questioned for being a witch.
Anne Hutchinon: She was accused of dealing with witchcraft because she helped deliver a stillborn.
Tituba: She was the first person accused in the Salem witch trials for no real reason other than what historians have assumed is because of race as she was an enslaved woman.
These examples show the absurdity of what was going on and also that the people of Salem didn’t need any real reason to go and send someone to the noose just for being different.
